Beth Lapides’ alternative Un-Cabaret comedy performance series returns for an unlimited run to its original home, the space formerly known as LunaPark, now called Moomba. The bill, featuring offbeat, off-the-wall comic talent, changes weekly. Previous headliners have included Julia Sweeney, Andy Dick, Moon Zappa, Bob Odenkirk, Kathy Griffin and many others.

The UCLA Hammer Museum opens its fall season with three new shows: “Dave Muller: Connections” pays homage to art exhibition announce-

ments and invitations through about 200 witty drawings and watercolors. A multimedia video installation incorporating performance, video and Arthur Penn’s 1962 film “The Miracle Worker” make up “Catherine Sullivan: Five Economies (big hunt/little hunt).” Lastly, Tokyo artist Tomoko Takahashi creates an installation using found materials recovered from L.A.’s electronic junkyards, studio prop houses and other sources of “industrial refuse.”

--children. The author will read “Summerland,” his children’s fantasy about an 11-year-old who is recruited to play baseball against magical beings. Chabon will discuss and take questions about his first children’s book, with reviewer Sonja Bolle. Following the reading and discussion, children will have an opportunity to meet the magical characters from the book and participate in a writing workshop to create their own characters.

The annual Carl Wilson Foundation benefit concerts, held in memory of the Beach Boy singer and lead guitarist who died in 1998 of cancer, are always emotional affairs, but especially so when big brother Brian participates. The Beach Boys’ musical architect is aboard this year, and he’ll be joined by his longtime collaborator, songwriter-producer Van Dyke Parks, for a show Sunday at UCLA’s Royce Hall that gets extra marquee muscle from Eric Clapton and Sugar Ray. The foundation was set up by Carl’s two sons to support cancer research and organizations that help those with cancer.
