WHEN UCLA HAS THE BALL

Bruin freshman Tyler Ebell ran for 203 yards in three quarters last week and earned his first start. But under defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti, Oregon makes shutting down the run a priority. So Bruin quarterback Cory Paus must prove early that he can connect with receivers being covered man-to-man and force the Ducks to back off the line of scrimmage. Paus, a senior coming off a career-best game, has a history of playing well against Oregon and should have success against the undersized, inexperienced Duck secondary. A successful passing game should open up running room for Ebell.

WHEN OREGON HAS THE BALL

The Ducks will take a tip from Colorado, which beat UCLA by pounding off tackle. Onterrio Smith is considered the best running back in the Pac-10 and has rushed for more than 100 yards in every game this season. He will take plenty of shots at a defense that is missing tackle Rodney Leisle because of injury. Also, end Dave Ball must sit out the first half because he was ejected for fighting last week. Oregon can pass too. Quarterback Jason Fife has 10 touchdown passes and only one interception. Defenses have been successful focusing on dangerous receiver Keenan Howry. Samie Parker has benefited from the attention on Howry, leading the Ducks with 22 catches and four touchdowns.

KEYS TO UCLA VICTORY

The depleted Bruin defensive line must contain Duck tailback Onterrio Smith, who is averaging 4.7 yards a carry.

2. Quarterback Cory Paus must not aggravate his bruised right shoulder and must exploit inexperienced Duck cornerbacks by hitting Craig Bragg and Tab Perry deep.

3. If history holds, the outcome will be determined in the fourth quarter. The Bruins must make plays down the stretch.
