The pastimes of radio’s Power monger

Share

He’s the salty morning mouth of the Southland’s most popular radio station, Power 106 (KPWR-FM), and the featured player in the most outrageous parodies of movie ads to ever grace an L.A. billboard.

A good soak

On the weekend, I just lay around in my boxers. No, actually, Friday when I get off, that’s when my weekend really kicks in. When I get home, I run some bathwater, I put that Vaseline Skin Therapy in the water and take a good old bath -- let the jets hit me. Yeah. Then I go get in the bed and take a nap.

Later the boys in my crew will come by, we load up the bus and we head for the club. I do a show. I drink my water -- no, I don’t drink alcohol or smoke. Now, I am working, but you know what? I am entertaining and I’m being entertained. I love it.

On the move

Saturdays, if there’s something that I want to see, I catch me a matinee. I’ll usually go to Universal CityWalk or to the Bridge in Culver City. Universal is cool.... I like it when there isn’t a gang of people around. I’ve got a plan, though. When I go, one of my guys will go up and grab the tickets, then I go in right before it starts. Sometimes I’ve missed the show, signing autographs and posing with people, taking pictures, but it’s all right.

Then next I’ll have lunch. I stopped eating meat, so I grab a salad anywhere. But I like to go to Joe’s Universal over on La Cienega. I have a salad and they have these steamed vegetables; it’s Caribbean food.

How about that?

I like boxing. I like to see it live -- those pro debuts -- when they’re young and hungry. I watch them boys beat the heck out of each other. But I didn’t watch the De La Hoya-Vargas fight, because Fernando Vargas is a personal friend of mine. But normally, I’ll watch boxing on TV too.

I watch MTV or MTV News or some job-related specials. But I’m more a Discovery Channel, MSNBC kind of guy; I like documentaries. You know, something that doesn’t have an actor, a plot. Yeah, I like documentaries -- and porn. (He’s joking.)

In my television room I’ve got my own nice big chair and an ottoman. And nobody can sit in my chair. I don’t care if I’ve got 15 people there and somebody’s got to stand up against the wall. I don’t care if I’m in the shower; I tell them: “No you cannot sit in my chair! “

I have a complete Surround Sound system, 66-inch screen and I sit right up on the screen -- in my chair.

For exercise, well I think about hiking. No, I have a trainer, but I don’t see him everyday. I try. But not everyday.

It’s a family affair

Sundays I like to hang with my family -- my brothers and sisters and cousins, nephews -- listen to some music. We’ve got a big family house in Culver City. I go to church with them sometimes. Being with family keeps you grounded.

My fantasy weekend would be if that Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, I’d have no obligations. Three days without having to be anywhere, eating the food that I can’t have. But I can never get those kind of days.

On the road again

My life is planes, trains and automobiles. Next week I’m going to Japan. Power 106 is broadcast in Japan, so I’m doing a concert -- six nights with Xzibit. But traveling is hard. When you get back, you’ve got to play catch-up.... I love being busy. I’m always working. I’m always doing something. But really, my whole life is a party.
