‘Idols’ or amateurs?

Obviously I’m not going to change Robert Hilburn’s mind about the “American Idol” concert (“No Pedestals for ‘Idol,’ ” Oct. 10), but keep in mind that Kelly Clarkson won the competition, and her single has gone to No. 1 faster than anyone else’s in recent music history.

There is a reason why Kelly won, and that is talent. Her talent might be crude and unrefined, but it is talent nonetheless. I know she will get better in time.

How dare you diss the performances of these kids. At least they’re trying to bring back wholesome music for our young people. Why don’t you go to the “American Idol” message boards and look on Justin Guarini’s board? You’ll find that he has a multitude of fans of all races, ages and both genders who love him and think he’s the greatest. He will succeed in this thing called show biz because of his tremendous talent and his fans supporting him.

They also dissed Elvis when he first appeard on stage. Also the Beatles. How about Madonna? Oprah thought so highly of Justin that she had him on her show. “Saturday Night Live” did a parody on Justin’s hair, which is the ultimate compliment.

Lighten up. Even Springsteen was an amateur once.
