Just to Hear Lohman’s Voice Brought a Smile

Al Lohman (obituary, Oct. 15) and partner Roger Barkley were one of the bright spots on the radio in Los Angeles. Many mornings in the ‘80s I didn’t get a lot of work done while they were on. Their cast of silly characters helped us not to take life too seriously. Oftentimes I borrowed one of the names they used for filling out unimportant forms. There will never be another Lohman and Barkley.

The morning drive was tolerable while listening to Ted J. Balogna, W., Dominic Longo and, of course, the outstanding Maynard Farmer. It was amazing to look around at the other cars on the freeway and see other drivers laughing at the situations brought to us by the Lohman and Barkley show.

I remember them talking about their annual golf tournament and “bringing out the sticks again,” and Lohman said, “One year we should try playing with golf clubs instead of sticks.” The coffee stains never did come out of my shirt, tie and pants. Thanks for the great memories and R.I.P.

I was the student speakers commissioner at UC Irvine. We booked Lohman and Barkley to perform their live stage show on our campus. The evening of the show a huge fire erupted in the hills close to where Lohman had his home. I spoke with him the afternoon of the performance, with flames licking at the perimeter of his house, and asked if he still wanted to perform. He said he felt comfortable enough to come to the school. Although Al was physically drained from dealing with the fire, he and Roger entertained to the roaring approval of their fans.

Thus began a 20-year friendship that I will always cherish. I echo those who have said what a kind, funny, talented and caring man Al was. Just to hear his voice when I would call him in Rancho Mirage brought a smile to my face.
