The footnotes to Miramax’s literary adaptations
Miramax Films, noted for films based on contemporary literary works, has had mixed success -- both critically and commercially -- with them.
The English Patient (1996), based on the 1992 novel by Michael Ondaatje. It delivered nine Oscars, including best picture and best supporting actress Juliette Binoche, as well as $232 million at the box office.
The Cider House Rules (1999), based on John Irving’s 1985 novel. Despite strong reviews, the movie proved to be a mid-level success at the box office. Oscars for Irving’s screenplay and supporting actor Michael Caine.
Chocolat (2000), from Joanne Harris’ 1998 novel. Binoche, Judi Dench and Johnny Depp starred; “Cider House’s” Lasse Hallstrom directed. Mixed reviews, five Oscar nominations (no wins) and $78 million worldwide.
The Shipping News (2001), adaptation of Annie Proulx’s 1993 novel. Classy cast -- Kevin Spacey, Judi Dench, Julianne Moore -- but dismal reviews and a mere $16 million at the box office.
