A look at some classic World Series openers:

1929 -- Rather than start Lefty Grove, the American League’s best pitcher, A’s Manager Connie Mack chose veteran Howard Ehmke, who pitched only 55 innings in the regular season. Ehmke gave up one unearned run and struck out 13 in a 3-1 win.

1954 -- Willie Mays’ over-the-shoulder catch off Vic Wertz, the most famous catch in Series history, kept Game 1 between the Giants and Indians tied at 1-1. The Giants won, 5-3, in 10 innings and went on to sweep the Series.

1968 -- One of only two times that two eventual league MVPs faced each other on the mound. Bob Gibson, Cardinals, vs. Denny McLain, Tigers. Gibson struck out 17 in a 4-0 victory.

1972 -- Oakland’s Gene Tenace homered in his first two World Series at-bats, a Series first. A’s beat the Reds, 3-2.

1982 -- Paul Molitor of Milwaukee had five hits, a World Series record, in the 10-0 opener against the Cardinals in St. Louis. Mike Caldwell tossed the shutout for the Brewers.

1987 -- The Minnesota Twins overpowered St. Louis, 10-1, in the first indoor World Series. Dan Gladden’s grand slam capped a seven-run fourth inning.

1988 -- With two out in the bottom of the ninth, Kirk Gibson hit a two-run, pinch homer to give the Dodgers a 5-4 victory over Oakland. Gibson, who had a strained left knee, limped around the bases as the Dodgers won one of the most dramatic games in Series history.
