Russian Plane Searched for Toxins Yields Furs
Federal agents met an airliner from Moscow at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York after receiving a tip that it might have radioactive material on board. A search of the plane turned up a box of furs.
Customs agents had one man in custody, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the airports. No details were released.
Agents ordered the plane to be kept away from passenger terminals, the 188 people aboard were evacuated and the aircraft was searched, Coleman said.
“It turns out it was a box full of furs,” Transportation Security Administration spokesman Robert Johnson said.
