Band takes the cake (to sell at shows)

You may have seen them outside concerts, selling oatmeal cookies and chocolate raspberry cheesecake, pistachio bread and pear custard tart -- all of it freshly baked by a local band, Breech.

Word on the street is that Missy Gibson, the group’s smoky-voiced lead singer, has a gift for baking bread. And her guitarist and accordion player? They make some mean cookies.

Two years ago, it was bake or bust for the indie rock five-piece. With not enough money to record a second album, Gibson suggested to her bandmates that they put on their hot mitts and hit the streets. Of the $10,000 needed to record “Apron Songs,” which is now available, $7,000 was raised through bake sales.

Today, they continue to push cookies, cakes and bread in hopes they will pay for future tours and recording projects. At a recent Bob Dylan show, chocolate-peanut butter bars and other goodies came with free glasses of milk to anyone who spent $3.

“We could do car washes,” Gibson said, “but I’m a really good baker.”

Next bake sale? Outside the Wiltern on Nov. 4 when the Rolling Stones play.
