Judge Refuses to Amend Bail Rules for Refugee

From Staff and Wire Reports

A federal judge declined Friday to modify bail conditions he imposed earlier this year on an Iranian refugee indicted on charges of soliciting donations at Los Angeles International Airport for an organization on the State Department’s list of terrorist organizations.

Without comment, U.S. District Judge Robert Takasugi dismissed a prosecution motion that would have required Roya Rahmani to relocate from Virginia to Southern California so she could be monitored more closely. He also rejected a defense motion that would have allowed her to travel more freely.

Rahmani and six others were accused of raising money for the Mujahedin-e Khalq, an Iraqi-based group dedicated to overthrowing the government in Iran. In June, Takasugi dismissed the indictment on grounds that the group had been denied due process when placed on the State Department list. The government is appealing his ruling.
