A knife-wielding man who claimed that he heard voices telling him to kill people slashed 10 children in a church school cafeteria in the South Korean capital today, a news agency reported.

The semiofficial Yonhap News Agency said three of the 10 children suffered severe head and neck injuries after the 53-year-old unemployed man stormed into the church and attacked.

Police, who were alerted by a school official, arrested the man 30 minutes after the attack. The incident took place as 45 children and three adults were eating lunch at the Neundong Church in the eastern Seoul neighborhood of Kunja-Dong.

The victims, students at the church preschool, were seven boys and three girls. A 6-year-old boy reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries.

The news agency quoted police as saying the man told them that he had heard voices Tuesday night telling him he would be killed unless he killed others.

The man was identified only by his family name, Hwang. The news agency said he lived in the Seoul neighborhood of Sadang.
