Ex-49er Held on Drunk-Driving Count
Former San Francisco 49er and USC All-American lineman Jeff Bregel was arrested early Labor Day morning on suspicion of drunk driving after rear-ending another car in Granada Hills, Los Angeles police said Tuesday.
The 38-year-old Granada Hills man was arrested about 1:30 on Rinaldi Street at Balboa Boulevard, LAPD spokesman Sgt. John Pasquariello said.
Bregel, who is being held at the Van Nuys jail in lieu of $50,000 bail, was booked for investigation of felony drunk driving. The other driver was not seriously injured, police said.
A graduate of Kennedy High School in Granada Hills, Bregel was an All-American offensive guard for USC in 1985 and 1986. A four-year letterman, he was a Trojan co-captain during his senior season in 1986.
At the end of that season, he was banned from playing in the 1987 Citrus Bowl after testing positive for steroids. He said he had used a steroid to speed up his rehabilitation from knee surgery.
Bregel was an Academic All-American in 1986. He was picked in the second round of the 1987 NFL draft by the 49ers and played with them for three seasons.
Detectives plan to present the case to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office today.
