The Chicago White Sox put shortstop Royce Clayton on waivers Sunday for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release.

Clayton was acquired in a trade from Texas on Dec. 14, 2000. He batted .251 with seven homers and 35 runs batted in this season.

He has appeared in only six of 25 games since Aug. 10. With only three weeks left in the season, Clayton is hoping he can help another club.

“It was for the best. I wasn’t playing here,” Clayton said. “There are a couple of weeks left. Maybe I could help somebody else.”

The Pittsburgh Pirates have released right-handed reliever Sean Lowe, who got one out in an 11-1 loss to the Florida Marlins on Sunday, giving up two hits and a run, and allowing two inherited runners to score.

Lowe was 4-2 with a 5.35 earned-run average in 43 games this season, including one start.

He was released even though roster space is not an issue in September and the Pirates are still obligated to pay all of his $950,000 contract.

“Looking at the number of guys we have and the number of games we have left, I just didn’t see many opportunities for him to pitch the rest of the way,” General Manager Dave Littlefield said.

Ernie Harwell jogged to the mound at Yankee Stadium, threw out the first ball and shook Roger Clemens’ hand.

Then, after getting a nice gift from New York Yankee Manager Joe Torre, Harwell hurried off the field. The 84-year-old Hall of Fame announcer went to the broadcast booth.

Harwell, the “Voice of the Tigers” for 42 of the last 43 years, is retiring after this season and he was honored before his final game at Yankee Stadium.

“I’ve seen a lot of great games and a lot of great players here,” he said.
