On Further Review, Bruin Win Looks Fine

Robyn Norwood’s article “Victory Looks Weak in Review,” [Sept. 9] was the most negative approach to reviewing a game that I’ve read in recent years.

Sure, the Bruins made some mistakes in their first game of the season, with many young players taking the field for the first time. But give them some credit for winning a game that a more experienced team could easily have lost.

As I listened to the UCLA football game last week, I heard announcer Steve Physioc speak of “the courage” shown by Colorado State quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt in trying to lead a late comeback, and “the courage” shown by UCLA Coach Bob Toledo in substituting a freshman in at quarterback in place of senior Cory Paus.

This is but another example of the absurd hyperbole that is all too common in the worlds of sports. In this of all weeks, Physioc and his ilk would do well to remember that words like “courage” should not be used lightly.
