Pigeon Tribute to 9/11 Turns Deadly for Birds
From Times Wire Reports
Things went very wrong in Jersey City when dozens of pigeons were released at a Sept. 11 anniversary ceremony.
Some of the birds got tangled in onlookers’ hair or fell into the Hudson River. Some crashed into office windows; others were found dead.
Instead of getting homing pigeons, organizers of the service bought the birds at a poultry shop.
A member of the organizing committee defended the decision, saying the city saved several hundred dollars and spared the pigeons a much worse fate.
“They’re all free. They’re not soup,” Guy Catrillo said.
