The new Every Picture Tells a Story/Aero Theatre Family Film Festival, featuring movies and cartoon classics every weekend, kicks off with “The 7th Voyage of Sinbad,” the 1958 fantasy epic chock-full of special-effects master Ray Harryhausen’s unforgettable stop-motion creatures and monsters. A storytelling hour will precede each screening.

The 44th annual Greek Fest benefiting St. Anthony’s Church in Pasadena brings authentic Greek music and dancing plus performances by costumed troupes. But the real star is the authentic homemade Greek food: souvlakia (shish kebab), moussaka (Greek shepherd’s pie), spanakopita (spinach with cheese on layered filo), dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves), baklava, pastries, appetizers, snacks, breads and more. The one sure thing at Hollywood Park Casino on Sunday is the Festival Tropical de las Estrellas 2002. The musical lineup features Gilberto Santa Rosa, one of Puerto Rico’s top salsa singers, and Wilfrido Vargas, whose innovations in Dominican merengue have been compared to what Charlie Parker did for jazz.

In Stephen A. Roberts’ world premiere rock ‘n’ roll drama, “One Night Only,” set in New York in 1980, John Lennon arranges to play a private show for a handful of friends and associates to help him decide whether to go on tour to promote his comeback album. Musician-actor Tim Piper, who provided the late Beatle’s singing voice in the NBC movie “In His Life: The John Lennon Story,” stars; members of his band, Working Class Hero, play supporting roles.

“Capturing Light: Masterpieces of California Photography, 1850-2000,” opening Saturday at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, showcases 200 images from the Oakland Museum of California’s permanent collection, focusing on rare works by photographers working in the state in the last 150 years. They include Carleton Watkins, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams, Robert Frank, Richard Misrach, Carrie Mae Weems and John Divola.

For its 50th-anniversary world tour, Ballet Folklorico de Mexico de Amalia Hernandez is dancing a kind of greatest-hits program: the most beloved suites created by Hernandez before her death two years ago. Expect to see the Yaqui “Deer Dance,” and the spectacular fiestas from Jalisco and Veracruz; plus more personal statements like “Revolution,” for instance, which contains Hernandez’s tribute to the heroic women who fought to make Mexico free. It is said that every Latino folklore company is either copying Hernandez or in rebellion against her--and the reason is still obvious, resplendently preserved under the artistic direction of her daughter, Norma Lopez.
