West Hollywood may sound more like West New York as a pair of rising bands from the Big Apple perform. At the Roxy, the Mooney Suzuki puts its spin on the continuing resurgence of guitar-dominated garage rock in shows tonight and Wednesday, while a short hop away at the Troubadour, Interpol concludes a two-night stand with its moody-gloomy sound that has drawn comparisons to Joy Division and U2.

Social essayist and cultural critic Barbara Ehrenreich spent most of 1998 working “undercover” as a waitress, a maid, a nursing home assistant and a Wal-Mart sales clerk, learning firsthand about how the working poor were affected by the welfare reform of the late 1990s. Joan Holden’s world-premiere drama, “Nickel and Dimed,” is based on Ehrenreich’s book, “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America.”
