Sele May Get a Start During Final Weekend
SEATTLE — Aaron Sele, who has not pitched in five weeks because of a partially torn rotator cuff, could start a game during the final weekend of the regular season. The Angels aren’t going to jeopardize their playoff preparations to accommodate Sele, but they wouldn’t mind getting him a few innings next weekend.
They have all but ruled out trying the lifelong starter in relief. “That’s not our preference,” Manager Mike Scioscia said. “That’s putting him in a precarious position.”
Sele pitched his second simulated game Friday and is scheduled to throw another Tuesday. Mickey Callaway, who replaced Sele in the rotation and made five starts, said he was told Friday he would pitch in relief the rest of the season.

For those wondering how the Angels can consider including September callup/phenom Francisco Rodriguez on a playoff roster: To be eligible, players must be on the 25-man major league roster or on the disabled list Aug. 31. But if one of the players on the playoff roster is injured, the team can substitute a player in the organization on Aug. 31, when Rodriguez was at triple-A Salt Lake. Should they wish to include Rodriguez, they could turn in a playoff roster with an injured player and substitute Rodriguez for him. The Angels currently have two players on the disabled list, Sele and pitcher Steve Green.
