Taking the Drama Out of Angel Games

The Times, in an attempt to inject some drama into a fait accompli, trumpets the race between the Angels and the A’s as “AL West Showdown.”

What showdown? A quick look at the standings reveals that both teams (barring a miracle) are guaranteed playoff berths under the wild-card system. (A contrivance inflicted upon the sport by self-described “traditionalist” Bud Selig.)

Instead of the excitement and spectacle of two teams battling down to the wire with something actually at stake, we get two teams playing out the string, each knowing that they have playoff berths locked up whether they finish first or not.

That’s a showdown? Not in my book. Yet, all the chin-strokers still can’t figure out why baseball is losing fans to football, basketball and soccer.

In last week’s letters, Peter Ueberroth’s shameless plug for Michael Eisner and Disney executives was absolutely pitiful and is an insult to the real reason for the Angels’ magnificent play. Mike Scioscia, Bud Black, Mickey Hatcher et al. and the players are the real reason for the Angels’ inspired play. The rally monkey has more to do with the Angels winning than Disney or Eisner.

Next time Ueberroth decides to write some Disney propaganda, please send it to the Disney shareholders or perhaps enclose it in Eisner’s Christmas card.
