No Dubbing Needed

Disney insists on dubbing Hayao Miyazaki’s animated masterpieces with American voices, rather than simply using subtitles, because “Miyazaki is a truly visual storyteller ....If your eyes are fixed on the bottom of the screen, you’re going to miss visual elements that are unique and wonderful” (“Entering Strange Realms,” by Charles Solomon, Sept 8).

Was not “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” also a splendidly visual experience? That film did not appear to suffer from its subtitled-only theatrical release. When will Disney begin to market Miyazaki’s work to those who can actually appreciate it? Discriminating audiences have no problem reading subtitles.
