An Orange County sheriff’s deputy critically injured when his motorcycle was hit by a car underwent surgery late Saturday to relieve swelling in his brain.

Matthew Davis, 38, was in grave condition at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center with massive head trauma a day after the crash in a Mission Viejo intersection.

The married father of three young children was thrown from his bike about 20 feet and hit a traffic sign. The driver of the car, a 17-year-old girl, was not injured.
