Ward Helps U.S. Win Solheim Cup
Led by Wendy Ward’s surprising performance against No. 1-ranked Annika Sorenstam, the United States came from two matches down to defeat Europe, 15 1/2-12 1/2, Sunday and win the LPGA Solheim Cup at Edina, Minn.
When Karine Icher missed a short putt on the 15th hole in her match against Rosie Jones, the Americans were assured of the 14 points they needed to win the event.

Golf--The U.S. team of women golfers needed at least 14 1/2 points to ensure victory over the European team in the Solheim Cup. The number of points necessary for victory was incorrect in a Sports story Monday.
“They put out every single ounce of effort they had today,” team captain Patty Sheehan said. “These ladies have so much heart and guts.”
No one played tougher than Ward. Ranked 56th on the LPGA money list, she halved her match and could have won had she sunk a four-foot putt on the 18th hole.
“We felt if we could get Annika’s match to turn, we could have done something,” European captain Dale Reid said.
The U.S. got off to a hot start with wins in the first three matches by Juli Inkster, Laura Diaz and Emilee Klein.
