David Elmendorf, an airplane pilot who flew in the National Air Races in Cleveland in 1935 and Los Angeles in 1936, died Sept. 20 in Los Angeles. He was 91.

Peter Kowald, a German jazz bassist best known for his work in improvisation and free-form styles, died of a heart attack Saturday in New York City. He was 58.
