Janzen Has Lead With a Fast Finish

Lee Janzen moved into the lead after the third round of the BellSouth Classic at Duluth, Ga., shooting a five-under-par 31 on the last nine holes Saturday for a two-stroke advantage over Bob Tway.

Janzen, who hasn’t won a PGA Tour event in five years, finished with a five-under 67 on the rain-softened TPC at Sugarloaf, which had played hard and fast in the first two rounds. He had a 13-under 203 total.

Tway, mired in an eight-year losing streak, held the lead most of the round before a bogey on No. 17. He rallied with a birdie on the last hole, shooting a 69.

Tennis

Argentina upset defending champion Russia in a Davis Cup World Group quarterfinal. Australia and Spain also advanced. Switzerland leads France, 2-1, in their best-of-five series.

In the Sept. 19-21 semifinals, Spain will play host to Argentina and Australia will meet Switzerland or France.

Monica Seles has withdrawn from this week’s WTA Family Circle Cup at Charleston, S.C., because of a stress fracture in her left foot.

She was injured while practicing in February and was forced to withdraw from the Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells last month and the Nasdaq-100 Open at Florida two weeks ago.

Boxing

Super-heavyweight Jason Estrada was a 6-2 winner over George Garcia in the U.S. Challenge at Colorado Springs, Colo., as he became the first boxer to win both the national championships and the U.S. challenge three years in a row.

The event, held at the Olympic Training Center, is the first of seven qualifiers leading to next year’s Olympic trials.

Juan McPherson, the fighter Olympic coach Emanuel Steward says has the best shot at Olympic gold, won his match at 152 pounds, 15-7, over Andre Berto.

Samson Guillermo (119 pounds) and Rayonta Whitfield (106) scored the only two knockdowns of the night and went on to win their respective divisions.

Heavyweight Devin Vargas was a 20-4 winner over Francisco Palacios; Andre Ward (178) won a 23-5 decision over Rommel Rene; Andre Dirrell (165) tied 5-5 with Jesus Gonzales but won via the tiebreaker; Lamont Peterson (141) defeated Chad Aquino, 11-4; Aaron Garcia (125) was a 7-6 winner over Joe Perez, and Raul Martinez (112) outpointed Roberto Benitez, 27-12.

Karl Dargan won the 132-pound berth when his opponent, Antonio Johnson, was unable to make weight.

Saturday’s winners go to the Pan American Games in the Dominican Republic in August. The second-place finishers advance to the world championships in July in Thailand.

Markus Beyer (27-1) of Germany beat Eric Lucas (36-5-2) of Canada in a split decision at Leipzig, Germany, to win the World Boxing Council middleweight title. Judges from Italy and the United States scored the fight 116-113 for Beyer, and a British judge had Lucas winning, 115-114.

College Basketball

Mick Cronin has been hired as men’s coach at Murray State. Cronin, the top assistant to Rick Pitino at Louisville the last two seasons, succeeds Tevester Anderson, who retired March 23.

Dayton Coach Oliver Purnell has accepted an offer to become coach at Clemson, Dayton Athletic Director Ted Kissell said. Larry Shyatt resigned as Clemson’s coach last month.

Beach Volleyball

The top-seeded men’s team of Eric Fonoimoana and Dax Holdren advanced to the semifinals of the AVP Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Open by defeating Paul Baxter and Carl Henkel, 21-10, 21-13. Fonoimoana and Holdren will play Matt Fuerbringer and Casey Jennings, who defeated Dain Blanton and Jeff Nygard, 21-17, 15-21, 21-19.

The other semifinal will feature second-seeded Brent Doble and Karch Kiraly, who beat Ian Clark and Scott Davenport, 21-11, 21-17. They will play third-seeded Canyon Ceman and Mike Whitmarsh, who beat the sixth-seeded team of Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong, 21-17, 22-20.

Miscellany

Clint Dolezel threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Terrill Shaw with 18 seconds left to give the Grand Rapids Rampage a 56-49 Arena Football League victory over the Indiana Firebirds at Indianapolis.... Mike Horacek had 15 receptions for 176 yards and three touchdowns and Jay McDonagh passed for 291 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Las Vegas Gladiators (5-4) to a 68-34 win over the Colorado Crush (1-8) at Las Vegas.

Jenny Thompson won her 26th national title with a victory in the 50-meter freestyle in the U.S. Spring National Swimming Championships at Indianapolis.

Thompson, 30, set a personal best of 25.02 seconds.

Tom Wilkens, 27, won his 17th men’s national title by winning the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes 1.43 seconds.

Midfielder John Harkes, who played for the U.S. in soccer’s World Cup in 1994, retired. Harkes, 36, had six goals in 90 appearances with the national team from 1987 to 1998. He played in England and in Major League Soccer.

Sharon Day of Costa Mesa High cleared 6 feet 2 inches to win the girls’ high jump at the Trabuco Hills Invitational. Day’s mark is the best in the nation this year. She had one close miss at 6-4 1/4, which would have been a national record.

At Mobile, Ala., Ashlee Brown of Riverside North won the 100-meter hurdles in a nation-leading 13.86 seconds, the 300-meter hurdles in 42.76 and helped North to a 400-meter relay win in 46.06.

UCLA offensive tackle Matt Mosebar has left the football team for personal reasons.

Defending national champion California recorded the fastest times in men’s and women’s qualifying at the Crew Classic on Mission Bay in San Diego.
