In a McDonald’s comfort zone

Share

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your article about McDonald’s (“The Super-Sized Culture,” April 9.) We have traveled to many foreign countries in the past 20 years, and on one occasion, we took our then 12-year-old grandson with us to Spain, Portugal and Morocco. There is a Burger King on almost every street in Spain. That is all my husband and grandson wanted to eat. We had to stop at the McDonald’s in the airport also. I couldn’t get them to break for just one meal and try some paella.

Two years ago my husband and I went to Egypt and Israel. McDonald’s was across the street from our hotel in Cairo. I must confess that I did eat there the first day because the hotel fare was very American and any local spots did not appear to be very clean. But I have always said that “I don’t do McDonald’s” and my husband thinks I am a snob. But like you, I just don’t like their food, except for the French fries. One night in Tel Aviv, we were discussing with two other couples where to eat and one man suggested McDonald’s. We thankfully opted for a small seafood restaurant. We had a lovely meal and the service was exceptional.
