Man Drowns 20 Feet From Lake Shore
A 20-year-old man drowned Wednesday while trying to retrieve a ball that had fallen into Castaic Lake, authorities said.
About 4 p.m., the man dived into an area 20 feet from shore and did not resurface, according to witnesses who summoned help. The area is closed to swimming this time of year.
County lifeguards found him in 6 to 8 feet of water about 20 minutes later. He was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“He was there with friends. They don’t know why he didn’t come out. He may have succumbed to the cold,” said Sheriff’s Lt. Brenda Cambra. The man’s name was withheld, pending notification of relatives.
