‘Never Gonna Dance’ -- not in L.A., anyway

Share

The new musical “Never Gonna Dance,” based on the RKO motion picture “Swing Time” starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, is skipping Los Angeles on its way to Broadway.

The world premiere of the dance musical, which celebrates the music of Jerome Kern, was planned for January at the Ahmanson and recently had been announced as a highlight of the theater’s 2003-04 season.

‘Never Gonna Dance’ -- An item in Thursday’s Quick Takes column on the cancellation of “Never Gonna Dance” at the Ahmanson Theatre misquoted a statement from the theater as “Center Theatre Group has signed a commitment from the producers of ‘Never Gonna Dance’ to present the pre-Broadway engagement” of the musical. The statement correctly reads “Center Theatre Group has a signed commitment from the producers.”

According to a terse statement issued Wednesday by Ahmanson artistic director-producer Gordon Davidson, “Center Theatre Group has signed a commitment from the producers of ‘Never Gonna Dance’ to present the pre-Broadway engagement of the musical at the Ahmanson Theatre from January to March 2004. Unfortunately for Los Angeles audiences, they have decided not to honor that commitment and go directly to New York this fall when a Broadway theater was made available to them. We regret this unprecedented decision.”

The statement said that the Ahmanson has begun a search for a replacement show.
