Treatment of Ducks Ruffles a Few Feathers

I was very disappointed when I opened the paper Thursday. What is top billing? The Lakers. What is with that? The Ducks did something Wednesday night that has not been done in 51 years! They swept the defending Stanley Cup champions in the first round of the playoffs! The last time that was done was 1952. The Ducks deserved top billing!

We (the Red Wings) lost the Dominator (Dominik Hasek) at the end of last season, and it appears the Ducks have replaced him. What an incredibly great and inspiring four games by Anaheim. I still think my Wings played very good hockey, but Jean-Sebastien Giguere was a wall.

Congratulations to the underdogs. We’re disappointed for sure, but we’ll be back next year. If you can’t be a Wing, might as well be a Duck!

When I read that defenseman Mathieu Schneider hadn’t stopped smiling since being traded from the Kings to Detroit, I was incensed.

But as I watched the Ducks sweep the invincible Red Wings right out of the playoffs, I can honestly say that revenge is sweet for this Kings’ fan. Hey Mathieu, guess who’s smiling now?

If Red Wing defenseman Chris Chelios should ever wonder why his peers in the league consider him a first-class jerk, he need only look in the mirror. It is clear that Chelios can dish it out, but he certainly can’t take it.

When all was said and done, and the Ducks had taken it to him and the Red Wings in four straight games, Chelios dissed his opponents and refused to participate in the traditional Stanley Cup playoff postseries handshakes. Instead, from my season seats six rows behind the visitors’ bench, I saw Chelios head straight to the dressing room.

Way to go, Chris. Nice role model for your children. Great sportsmanship.

In one season, you’ve managed to go from Stanley Cup champ to Stanley Cup chump.

So let me see if I have this correct: Instead of constantly whining about their financial condition, the Ducks went out last summer and signed some free agents, then made some trades during the season which helped them to make the playoffs and become more profitable.

Are you reading this, Tim Leiweke?
