Injury Ends Year for Ipi Tombe

Share

Ipi Tombe, the brilliant mare who was bred in Zimbabwe, is out for the rest of the year because of a leg injury.

A winner of 12 of 14 and $1,529,799, the daughter of Manshood was injured in a workout at Churchill Downs last month.

Owned by Sunmark Partners, Team Valor and WinStar Farms, Ipi Tombe had been scheduled to run Aug. 16 in either the $750,000 Beverly D. or the Arlington Million.

Ipi Tombe might return for the winter-spring meet at Gulfstream Park in January then return to Dubai.

Race of the day: The third at Del Mar is a six-furlong race for $12,500 3-year-old fillies, but it takes on added significance today because it is the first leg of a pick six with a carry-over of $524,080. The feature on today’s twilight card is the $75,000 Daisycutter Handicap at five furlongs on the turf. Grant Marty A Wish is the likely favorite.

One for the road: Stellar tries two turns and turf for the first time in today’s sixth at Saratoga, a $50,000 allowance at one mile. Trained by Patrick Biancone, the 3-year-old filly is bred for the grass and was last seen chasing Mother Goose and Coaching Club American Oaks winner Spoken Fur at Churchill Downs. Tony Farina will ride Stellar, who broke her maiden on the Saratoga main track in her debut on July 28, 2002.

Exotically speaking: A pick three singling Dutchess Eben in the third, using all in the fourth and singling Thedevilinme in the fifth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 1/13. Money: Previous day/meet total: $4.80/$83.80. Total money bet: $136.
