Peter Schwed, 92, an author and executive at the book publishing firm Simon & Schuster, died Thursday in New York City. The cause of death was not reported.

Schwed served as editorial chairman and trade books publisher with the company and helped publish authors such as P.G. Wodehouse, Irving Wallace and Cornelius Ryan.

He was also known for editing books written by sports celebrities such as Jack Nicklaus, Chris Evert and Ted Williams.

Schwed wrote or contributed to several books and co-authored the 1979 Nancy Lopez autobiography, “The Education of a Woman Golfer.”

A native of New York City, Schwed quit college during the Depression to go to work at a bank. After serving in the Army in Europe during World War II, he joined Simon & Schuster. He was named executive editor and vice president in 1957, worked as publisher of the trade books division from 1966 to 1972, and retired as chairman emeritus of the editorial board in 1984.
