Bay-Area Herring Fishing Ban Proposed
From Times Wire Reports
A state agency has proposed an indefinite ban on herring fishing for the San Francisco Bay area because of a major decline in their numbers.
The ban would close down the last urban fishery in the U.S., said Ed Ueber, manager of the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary.
Studies by the California Department of Fish and Game have indicated that the decline is because of an increase in water temperatures, not fishing, but the department said the yearly catch does not help.
