A 46-year-old Apple Valley man was killed Monday in a police pursuit that ended when his car stuck a light pole and burst into flames in Highland, authorities said.

The crash occurred at 5:14 a.m., just a few minutes after a San Bernardino County sheriff’s sergeant questioned the man after finding him inside a car in a grocery-store parking lot at Highland and Victoria avenues, Sheriff’s Department spokesman Chip Patterson said.

The man told the sergeant he did not have identification and gave a name and date of birth. When the sergeant went to his patrol car to check, the man sped away, reaching speeds of 80 mph during the chase, Patterson said.

A short time later, the driver veered off Highland Avenue, stuck a pole and the car was engulfed in flames, Patterson said. The man’s name is being withheld until his family is notified.
