Woman Gets Life Term in Kidnap-Torture Case
A woman convicted of hiring two men to torture and kill her lover because she thought he had stolen from her and was seeing another woman was sentenced in San Diego on Wednesday to life in prison.
Federal prosecutors said that in August 1998, Kimberley Bailey lured private investigator Richard C. Post III to Tijuana, where he was kidnapped by John Krueger and Humberto Uribe. Over the next five days, Uribe and several other men beat Post and tortured him with pliers, the U.S. attorney’s office said.
As Post was being held, Bailey interrogated him and encouraged his captors to torture him, prosecutors said. They said she then ordered Uribe to kill Post. His body was never found.
Bailey paid $40,000 to have Post kidnapped and another $10,000 to have him killed, federal agents said.
In July 2002, a federal jury in San Diego convicted Bailey of conspiring to kidnap a person in a foreign country, kidnapping, and using an interstate commerce facility in the commission of a murder for hire.
Krueger, who testified at Bailey’s trial, pleaded guilty last year to conspiring to kidnap Post and was sentenced to 12 years in prison and five years of supervised release. He also was fined $25,000.
Uribe was extradited to the United States from Mexico last month.
He is scheduled for a pretrial hearing in a San Diego federal court next month.
