Tale of teen girls in trouble

Nikki Reed, now a grand old 15, co-wrote and co-stars in “Thirteen,” a cautionary tale that is a virtual horror film for parents of teenage girls. Evan Rachel Wood plays an adolescent girl whose pursuit of teenage cool makes her a wild new friend (Reed) and leads her down a dangerous path filled with sex and drugs. Director Catherine Hardwicke co-wrote the screenplay.

“Thirteen,” rated R for drug use, self-destructive violence, language and sexuality, all involving teens, opens Friday in selected theaters.

JAZZ

Tunes in the woods

For those who prefer their jazz where the air is rarefied, the annual Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines festival happens this weekend. The jazz party in Idyllwild, which is in the San Jacinto Mountains 5,300 feet above Palm Springs, will offer such stars as Hiroshima, Poncho Sanchez, Charles McPherson and more than 15 other acts in a two-day, almost nonstop musical program on three stages. Look up! It’s a movie screen!

The bumper-to-bumper club traffic on the Sunset Strip may be a pain, but it provides an audience

for the short films being projected on the jumbotron screens above the street.

Selected Super 8, computer-animated and Quicktime movies from USC’s Arts in Motion IV Festival, to be held in October, are being shown hourly on the digital screens outside 8410 and 9039 Sunset Blvd. A reception will be held in the courtyard of 8410 Sunset Blvd. tonight from 7:30 to 9:30.

A sprightly program

In addition to its impressive lineup, with N.E.R.D., the Roots, Talib Kweli, Robert Randolph & the Family Band and O.A.R., the Sprite Liquid Mix Tour is one of the bargains of the summer, with tickets under $20. Last year’s inaugural show offered a promising, if uneven, addition to summer festival mania, and this year’s bill looks even stronger.

Ah, sweet mystery

A comic and her book

Novacek on piano

Los Angeles native John Novacek, now living in New York but a frequent Southland visitor, will be the soloist in two works with the Marina del Rey Summer Symphony led by Frank Fetta. He’ll play Falla’s “Nights in the Gardens of Spain” and Prokofiev’s Third Concerto. The program will conclude the outdoor series for this season.

DANCE

A world of movement

This weekend, dance at the John Anson Ford Amphitheatre is all over the map, with Spanish Gypsy music and dance by Yaelisa and her Caminos Flamencos company on view Thursday and Saturday evenings, but the Lula Washington Dance Theatre sandwiched in between with a Friday night performance emphasizing African American expression. And that’s not all: Inca, the Peruvian Ensemble presents a family program on Saturday morning. Stellar firebrand Domingo Ortega joins Yaelisa, who just finished overseeing the New World Flamenco Festival in Irvine. Besides offering four company premieres, Lula Washington will join former Katherine Dunham dancer Trina Parks in a danced tribute to the legendary Dunham. And Inca will turn Cahuenga Pass into a facsimile of the Urubamba River Valley in its folkloric morning program.

A real, live astronaut

Mercury 7 astronaut Gordon Cooper -- one of the men featured in the book and movie “The Right Stuff” -- will serve as grand marshal for the Experimental Aircraft Assn.’s weekend Air Show & Fly-In. Along with narrated flight demonstrations, the event will recognize the 100th anniversary of the first Wright Brothers flight in Kittyhawk, N.C. Like a timeline, a series of static displays will offer a decade-by-decade progression of flight and aircraft advancement. Visitors may sign up for plane rides and there will be food, souvenirs, non-aviation exhibits and activities for kids.
