Pacific Classic Down to 4
Trainer Richard Mandella, who scored the biggest upset in Pacific Classic history when 39-1 longshot Dare And Go ended Cigar’s winning streak at 16 in 1996, won’t have a chance to score another surprise on Sunday.
Kudos, the second-longest shot in what was a five-horse field, was scratched Friday when it was discovered he suffered a tendon injury in his left foreleg during his final workout Thursday morning.
A 6-year-old gelded son of Kris S. owned by Jerry and Ann Moss, Kudos, who has won seven of 24 starts and earned $1,238,935, worked five furlongs in 59.80 seconds.
“We’ll do some surgery, work on it, give him some time off and we’ll try him again next year,” Mandella said.
With the scratch of Kudos, the $1-million Pacific Classic is left with the smallest field in its 13-year history, and morning-line maker Jeff Tufts revised the line for the Grade I.
Fleetstreet Dancer is the longest shot in the field at 20-1, Medaglia d’Oro is the even-money favorite, Candy Ride is the 6-5 second choice and Milwaukee Brew is 3-1.
