A 48-year-old man sought for questioning in the May shooting death of a Ventura man has been arrested on suspicion of giving false information to a peace officer and violating parole, authorities said Saturday.

Stanley Louis Speer was taken into custody shortly before 5 p.m. Friday after a Ventura County sheriff’s deputy spotted him in the passenger seat of a car traveling on Harrison Avenue in west Ventura.

Authorities declined to comment on Speer’s arrest but said detectives planned to question him about the May 20 killing of Vincent David Gutierrez, 24, of Ventura, who was shot in the chest at an abandoned rock quarry in western Ventura County.

Gutierrez’s mother said Saturday that she was aware of Speer’s arrest but declined to comment on how her son and Speer knew each other.

Speer, who has lived in Ventura off and on for more than a decade, was being held without bail.
