Develop Port for Public Uses, Report Urges

From Times Wire Reports

Sacramento should focus on building up the city’s port for public uses such as recreation and tourism -- a move that probably would attract more federal dollars, according to a draft report by the city’s port advisory committee.

The report comes as city officials grapple with what to do with the neglected Sacramento port. Faced with losses of more than $900,000 for each of the last two years, port leaders hope to obtain federal money to improve its maritime business.

The 14-member citizens committee recommended a plan that includes recreation, tourism, education, commercial and cultural aspects. If the new vision generated more public support, the port would stand a better chance of improving its shipping operations, the report said.
