* Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. said it would eliminate about 500 salaried and nonunion jobs at its North American tire operations in a bid to cut costs.

* Sony Corp. promoted the president of its U.S. PlayStation business, Kazuo Hirai, to chief executive of the division. Hirai, a 19-year Sony executive, has been head of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, which markets and distributes PlayStation consoles and games, since 1996.

* Kmart Holding Corp. posted a narrower quarterly loss, the first look at how the discount retailer is faring after emerging from bankruptcy protection in May. Kmart, the largest U.S. retailer ever to declare bankruptcy, said it lost $5 million, or 6 cents a share, in its fiscal second quarter ended July 30. That compares with a loss of $293 million, or 58 cents, a year earlier.

* Energy producer Mirant Corp., which filed for bankruptcy protection last month, posted a loss of $28 million, or 7 cents a share, for the first quarter, compared with a restated year-earlier loss of $10 million, or 6 cents.
