From Times Wire Reports

The Army has promised a $50-million research grant to set up a biotechnology center at UC Santa Barbara.

The university’s largest-ever federal research grant will go toward helping scientists harness the technology that builds sea sponges and seashells and allows moths to sniff out mates. The Army Research Office has promised up to $50 million over five years. The new Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies is a partnership among UC Santa Barbara, Caltech, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and several industry partners.
