Time to Bet Breeders’ Cup

Share

Starting today at 10 a.m., horseplayers can make future bets on four of the eight Breeders’ Cup races Oct. 25 at Santa Anita.

In the $4-million Classic, Mineshaft was made the 5-1 favorite over Candy Ride (6-1), Medaglia d’Oro (10-1), Congaree (15-1), Empire Maker (8-1) and Funny Cide (30-1).

Considering his impressive victory in Sunday’s Pacific Classic, Candy Ride could well be favored at the end of this future bet period, Monday at 6 p.m. However, the unbeaten Argentine-bred is not Breeders’ Cup eligible and would have to be supplemented for $800,000. In the $2-million Distaff, Azeri, the defending champion with an 11-race win streak, is the 2-1 favorite. Sightseek and Wild Spirit, both trained by Bobby Frankel and considered Azeri’s biggest threats, are 5-1 and 10-1, respectively.

The 6-1 choice in the $1-million Sprint is Shake You Down, who would have to be supplemented for $90,000. Alamshar is the 6-1 favorite in the $2-million Turf.

Race of the day: Ashado, who has won her two starts by a combined 10 lengths, heads a field of eight 2-year-old fillies in today’s $200,000 Spinaway, a Grade I at seven furlongs at Saratoga. Also running: Unbridled Beauty, Be Gentle, America America, Dixie Waltz, Charming Humor, Daydreaming and Stoic.

One for the road: Im The Voice had a rough trip from the rail in her first start Aug. 13 during the Bay Meadows Fair meet. The 2-year-old Distinctive Cat filly gets a better post today and can win the fourth at Bay Meadows.

Exotically speaking: A pick three singling Cee’s Valley Girl in the sixth, Crazy Ensign, Christel Flame and Se Vera in the seventh and Scenic Wonder, Steeleon Season and Awesome Dividend in the eighth.

Winners: Previous day/meet total: 1/74. Money: Previous day/meet total: $10.40/$425.40. Total money bet: $546.
