Police fired a least two shots into a car they had been chasing Friday afternoon through Hollywood when the car began backing toward them, officials said, but the driver was not hit.

The unidentified male driver, who was armed with a pistol, was pulled from the car and arrested, investigators said.

Detectives said the incident apparently began with a disturbance involving a gun in the 7600 block of Fulton Avenue in North Hollywood.

The man fled from officers sent to investigate the disturbance, and police gave chase along streets in North Hollywood and Hollywood, detectives said.

The Los Angeles Police Department said that when the man’s red Ford Mustang convertible became boxed in by traffic on Santa Monica Boulevard near the Hollywood Freeway, a patrol car pulled up behind him and two officers got out with guns drawn.

When the man started to back up, at least one of the officers fired. After the man was arrested, a loaded semiautomatic pistol was found on the car seat, police said.
