‘Angels,’ ‘Queer Eye’ are among nominees

HBO’s six-hour adaptation of Tony Kushner’s landmark play “Angels in America”; Bravo’s “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy”; ESPN’s first original dramatic series, “The Playmakers”; the PBS documentary “Brother Outsider”; and the Diane Lane film “Under the Tuscan Sun” are among the nominees for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation’s 15th annual GLAAD Media Awards, which are being announced today.

GLAAD is also announcing that it will give special honors to Julianne Moore, Megan Mullally, Cherry Jones, John Waters and Clive Barker at the Media Awards ceremonies, to be held March 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, April 12 at the New York Marriott Marquis hotel and June 5 at the Westin St. Francis hotel in San Francisco.

The GLAAD awards recognize media for what the organization deems to be fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and issues that affect their lives.

Nominees in key categories include:

Film, wide release: “Bend It Like Beckham” and “Under the Tuscan Sun.”

Film, limited release: “Die Mommie Die!,” “Gasoline,” “Madame Sata,” “Mambo Italiano” and “Yossi & Jagger.”

Drama series: “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Playmakers,” “Queer as Folk” and “Six Feet Under.”

Comedy series: “It’s All Relative,” “Oliver Beene,” “Reno 911!,” “Sex and the City” and “Will & Grace.”

Television movie: “Angels in America,” “Cambridge Spies,” “Normal,” “Soldier’s Girl” and “Tipping the Velvet.”

Los Angeles theater: “Autumn Canticle,” “Blues for an Alabama Sky,” “Body of Faith,” “Miss Coco Peru Is Undaunted” and “Naked Will: The Portrait of W.H.”
