Rock singer Ozzy Osbourne broke his collarbone and six ribs and sustained other injuries Monday in an all-terrain vehicle crash on his property in England, according to his Los Angeles publicist, Cindy Guagenti. Osbourne underwent emergency surgery, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening, Guagenti said.

The British singer and star of MTV’s reality series “The Osbournes” was riding the four-wheeled vehicle during a day off from a promotional tour surrounding the release of a duet single with his daughter Kelly, the publicist said.

Osbourne, 55, came to prominence in the 1970s fronting the heavy metal rock band Black Sabbath. He gained notoriety for biting the head off a live bat during a concert, epitomizing the dark side of rock music to many. He embarked on a solo career in 1981, and with his wife and manager, Sharon, launched in 1996 “Ozzfest,” a successful annual hard-rock concert tour.

In recent years, he changed his image to one of a befuddled latter-day Ozzie Nelson, the head of the expletive-spewing family documented in “The Osbournes.”

Last week, he claimed that his stupor-like appearance on the show was the result of prescription drugs he received from a Beverly Hills physician, David Kipper, who is under investigation for overprescribing medicine to celebrity patients.

Production began recently for the third season of “The Osbournes.” An MTV spokeswoman said Monday that it was not known how the accident would affect production.
