Blackhawks Put End to Winless Skid at 14

Mark Bell scored 15 seconds into overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 4-3 home victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night and end their 14-game winless streak.

Bell slid a shot past Curtis Joseph with one hand despite being pulled down by defenseman Jason Woolley as he skated down the slot. The Blackhawks were 0-9-2-3 during their slump.

Calgary 1, Carolina 0 -- Shean Donovan scored in the third period and Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 23 shots at home for his first shutout with the Flames. Donovan, who had a six-game scoring streak ended Tuesday, scored his team-leading 12th goal of the season 1:45 into the third period.

Toronto 1, Minnesota 0 -- Ed Belfour stopped 28 shots at St. Paul, Minn., for his third shutout this season. It was Toronto’s eighth straight road win, and the 10th consecutive game in which the Northeast Division-leading Maple Leafs earned a point.

Washington 6, Boston 5 -- The host Capitals made Coach Glen Hanlon’s debut a successful one, scoring three quick first-period goals. The Capitals ended a three-game losing streak and no longer have the NHL’s fewest points.

Ottawa 3, Tampa Bay 2 -- The Senators’ Marian Hossa ended a 10-game goal-scoring drought. Radek Bonk and Bryan Smolinski also scored for the Senators at Ottawa as they improved to 4-1-1 in their last six games.

San Jose 2, Edmonton 2 -- Patrick Marleau scored two goals and Evgeni Nabokov stopped 42 shots in his first start for the Sharks in nearly three weeks. The Oilers failed to convert several late scoring chances while falling to 0-3-3-1 in San Jose since March 27, 2000.

Colorado 1, Vancouver 1 -- Ed Jovanovski scored on an end-to-end rush 6:02 into the third period for the Canucks at Vancouver, Canada.
