Three’s a Crowd for Pinelli in the Marathon
Trainer Laura Pinelli appears to have the $175,000 Marathon National, the richest 870-yard race in the country, surrounded.
Pinelli will saddle the three-horse entry of Heros Call, Oak Canyon and Coolmore, the 6-5 morning-line choice, in an eight-horse field in the second of two Grade I races tonight.
Before the Marathon, 10 3-year-olds will compete in the $155,950 Southern California Derby at 400 yards.

Four! Amir Sadatt, Nothing Lacking, Valstrak and Shems in the sixth; Toasting My Dad-Meteoric entry in the seventh; Heros Call-Oak Canyon-Coolmore entry and Johnny Be Good in the eighth; Heza Fast Streaker, Carotenes Form, Snow Wonder I Win and Let The Goose Loose in the ninth.
Shots in the dark: Splashy Nicole stretches out to 870 yards for the first time in the second. One For The Ladies debuts for trainer Carlos Lopez in the fourth.
