From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Having scrapped a controversial bid to rename a road after the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. last month, a small group of current and former San Jose residents plans to try again to commemorate the slain civil rights leader with a county expressway.

The group, led by former San Jose police officer Ken Stewart, says it will ask the county board of supervisors today to consider renaming Capitol, Lawrence, San Tomas, Montague or Almaden expressways in honor of King.

Stewart said he will work to avoid a political battle like the one that scuttled his earlier efforts to rename a road in East San Jose.
