“The Woman in Black”: Stephen Mallatratt’s ingenious adaptation of Susan Hill’s period novel about a haunting at a remote seaside house, presented by the Road Theatre Company, is a frightful, delightful, knee-knocking treat, thanks to director Ken Sawyer, actors Joe Hart and Paul Witten, and a crack design team. No blood or guts or graphic eviscerations here, only the kind of old-school suspense that relies on slamming doors, blustery winds and things that go bump in the night. This finely crafted period ghost story will put you so on edge, you’ll likely require a chiropractic adjustment afterward.
