From Times staff and wire reports

Officials at Los Angeles International Airport are recommending that passengers arrive 2 1/2 hours early for domestic flights and 3 1/2 hours early for foreign flights to allow time to get through security check-in lines.

Officials at airports in Burbank and Long Beach continue to recommend that passengers arrive 1 1/2 hours before their departure time, and officials at John Wayne Airport in Orange County said passengers should continue to arrive 2 1/2 hours before their scheduled flights.

Random vehicle searches started Sunday at Long Beach Municipal Airport, a spokeswoman said.

Officials at the Burbank, Long Beach and John Wayne airports would not discuss other security details.

The Transportation Security Administration said the “high” terror threat level also means:

* Increased random vehicle inspections and law enforcement at airports and their perimeters.

* More officers with police dogs patrolling airports.

* Parking restrictions.

* Additional signs and public announcements reminding people to report unattended baggage or suspicious activity.

* To help keep security check-in lines moving, passengers should remove metal items from their pockets and put them in carry-on luggage; take laptop computers out of luggage for inspection; and take off coats and be prepared to take off shoes.

*

The Federal Aviation Administration advised private pilots to check with the FAA because new airspace restrictions are in place.

*

At U.S. borders, U.S. Customs officials said the elevated threat level means:

* Intensive inspections at airports, seaports and land border crossings.

* Additional identification checks at land borders, and more vehicle searches.

* Increased examinations of cargo.
