A look at fluff and scary stuff

Alex & Emma

Kate Hudson, Luke Wilson

Warner Bros., $28

Rob Reiner may have directed the popular and influential 1989 romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally ... ,” but he fails to capture any of that film’s magic with this wan, fluffy story of a novelist (Wilson) with writer’s block who owes a lot of money to loan sharks.

Hudson portrays the forthright stenographer he hires for dictation of his latest novel. Of course, the two fall in love. The cast works hard but for naught.

The digital edition is a pretty bare-bones affair, with the only extras being the trailer and commentary with Reiner and Wilson. Reiner comes across as a gregarious, funny guy, and Wilson does seem a charmer, though his director often has to prod him to say something.

Jeepers Creepers 2

Ray Wise, Jonathan Breck

MGM, $27

If you enjoyed the 2001 sleeper horror film about a creature who awakens every 23 years to feed for 23 days, you’ll probably find this big-budget sequel worth a few chills and thrills.

Victor Salva, who wrote and directed the first one, is back for this boogeyman tale that finds the winged, flesh-eating Creeper terrorizing a bus filled with high school students.

Because the original did so well theatrically and in the home video market, MGM has wisely packed the DVD with extras. Included are documentaries on the making of the film, a production diary, photo galleries, deleted scenes and lines, and two commentary tracks, including one with Salva and several members of his young cast.
