Coasting through time in Long Beach

Times Staff Writer

This is one of about 150 historic houses in the Bluff Park area of Long Beach. The houses are across the street from a grassy park and the beach, but there are no structures on the ocean side to obstruct the view.

The house, built in 1919, is on Ocean Boulevard, where many wealthy oil families lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Clark Gable and W.C. Fields were among the Hollywood stars who owned homes there.

About this house: It is owned by restaurant publicist Frank Groff, who has produced culinary events featuring such food legends as Julia Child and has conducted ongoing public relations for such chefs and restaurateurs as Joachim Splichal of Patina and Pinot. Groff’s client roster also has included such restaurants as Planet Hollywood.

Groff has owned the Spanish-style home for about three years, during which he restored and added onto it. He is selling because he is expanding his Long Beach-based business to San Diego.

He plans to maintain smaller homes in both places.

Size: The house has four bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms. The main house is about 3,100 square feet; the guesthouse is an estimated 800 square feet. The lot is 11,000 square feet.

Features: The detached guesthouse was built earlier this year. It has a full kitchen and bathroom. Both kitchens in the home have stainless steel appliances. The main house has a 30-foot-long living room with a hand-carved fireplace. Several rooms, including the master suite, have views of the water. The home also has a pool and a waterfall spa.
